A Union Steward is one of your fellow co-workers who is volunteering to assist the Union with grievances, meetings, investigations, and other Union matters.
A Union Representative is a Labour Relations Specialist who works on staff at the Union. They handle and resolve the more advanced Labour Relations matters.
In your Collective Agreement there are specific timelines for each step in the grievance procedure. Most Collective Agreements have 4 steps: Early Resolution, Step 1, Step 2, and Arbitration.
This website makes it easy to file an official grievance once you reach Step 2, and track it as it's processed through the grievance procedure.
The time it takes to resolve each grievance varies depending on the complexity of the case. Most grievances are resolved at Step 2, which can often take weeks due to scheduling meetings, and negotiating settlements.
Grievances that get refered to Arbitration take months, sometimes years. The average wait time for an Arbitration hearing in Ontario is one (1) year from the date of referral.
